IT ALL BEGAN WITH OUR OWN FAMILIES

THE UNTETHERED STORY

Our story began at home, not dental school - with our own children's feeding struggles and our personal battles with breathing problems.

We didn't start out as airway specialists. We were general dentists watching our infants struggle to feed, experiencing the anxiety every parent feels when something isn't right. Even with our dental training, we didn't have the answers.

At the same time, we were dealing with our own unexplained health issues: poor sleep, chronic fatigue, and breathing difficulties.

And then everything clicked. The connection between tongue ties and infant feeding. The link between mouth breathing and child development. The relationship between airways and adult sleep problems. Every piece of the puzzle fell into place.

Through working with our own family members, I saw transformations that changed lives.

Now we spend our days helping other families find the same relief we did, treating everything from infant feeding issues to adult sleep problems through comprehensive airway care.

We're Drs. Meggie & Liz, Untethered's FOUNDERs.

What happens if I don't fix a tongue tie?

It depends on severity. Some mild ties cause no issues, while others lead to problems that show up over time—difficulty breastfeeding in infancy, speech delays in toddlers, or chronic jaw pain and sleep issues in adults. We evaluate every patient individually and recommend treatment only when it will make a real difference. About 15% of families who consult with us learn their child doesn't actually need intervention.

What kind of doctor fixes tongue ties?

Tongue ties can be treated by ENTs, pediatric dentists, or dentists with specialized airway training. At our Brookfield office, our doctors have advanced certification in laser frenectomy procedures and work alongside lactation consultants, speech therapists, and myofunctional therapists. The release itself is just one piece—what matters most is the follow-up care and exercises that help retrain the tongue afterward.

Are tongue ties covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. Medical insurance sometimes covers tongue tie releases when there's a documented feeding or speech issue, while dental insurance rarely does. Our Brookfield team helps families understand their options and provides the documentation needed for insurance claims or HSA/FSA reimbursement. We recommend calling your insurance provider before your appointment to confirm your specific benefits.
